Tips for Breathing
Remember that the breath has two distinct parts: the inhale and the exhale, or even more simply stated, breathing and blowing. A great way to insure that you are breathing correctly is to lie down with a heavy book on your midsection, making sure to raise the book with each breath. This insures a deep, full body inhalation. It is impossible to breathe incorrectly when laying on your back in this manner! Blowing, or the exhalation, is the part of the process that is a bit more tricky, because as flutists we must blow out in a controlled manner that lasts as long as our musical requirements dictate. Recall that again, the body knows how to use the diaphragm as it is used in laughing, coughing and crying. Blowing with a sensation of outward pressure will help maintain a supported exhale that is the cornerstone of breath control. |
